Simplicity in Design

Today, on my way back from what turn out to be a big Ebay scam/flop, I saw a very simple yet extremely eefective billboard. This got me thinking about my previous designs, and I rea;ized that my most successful designs have been very simple in color, texture and style.

This billboard consisted of a blue semi circle with a white square breaking line, just enough to catch the orange/black text delivering the message, it was simply brilliant.

Remember, when out of design ideas, always go back to the basics... this technique works well and delivers a clear and concise message.

KISS - Keep it simple s...

Alexa Ranking

Where I'm currently employed, alexa ranking is a big thing. Our whole business is based on this number. For those of you not familiar with alexa ranking, it is an independent company, owned and operated by amazon, who measures how popular Web sites are.

Our number has been steadly declining (the lower the number the better your site) and we hit our all time low today of 1994. That is, our site is number 1994 out of all the sites in the world. WOW!!!!!

Alexa works very much like the nielsen rating in that this number is based on a statistical sample with the difference that to participate in the sample you simply download the spyware/virus free toolbar.

I recommend you start paying attention to this number if you expect to expand your sites traffic. This will also measures how well you are search engine optimized. But that's a topic for another day.

IE 7, Here it comes

In an effort to boost the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft has announce an early list of new features that it will bundle with the popular Web browser, Internet Explorer. One oif the most prominent features is "phishing" protection, by which the browser will chek a list of suspected Web sites against a list of known sites in order to protect unsuspected Web browsing individuals.

As explained in the product documentation, Phishing Filter does this by first checking the address of the Web site you are visiting against a list of Web site addresses stored on your computer that have been reported to Microsoft as legitimate.

Hopefully MS won't forget to fix all the bugs and make the browser more compliant with the W3C as have others popular browsers such as Firefox and Opera. This will aid Web designers to obtain the same look and feel across the board. Only time will tell...

Gaming Google

A friend send me a link to a very interesting site, logole. Basically, you get to create your own google like logo for a clone of the popular search engine. It is a rip off of the search engine, google, and I imagine these guys are either going to be forced to take this site down or are going to get a copyright infrigment suit soon.

It's pretty funny though because they have google ads running, meaning they are making money from this logo scam through the google search engine. Pretty Good gaming!!!

The Joys of CSS

Great css day, got to create a menu strictly css based. While doing so, encounter a slight problem which after a 5 minute google search, got quickly resolved.

Did you know that you can have multiple a:link and a:visited groups. Well, I heard about it before, but never got a chance to implemented until today. It is pretty darn simple.
To setup a multiple scheme, simply put the class name in with the link part. Simple right? Better show you an example to make it crystal:

a.navlink:link {
color: #123456;
text-decoration: none;
}
a.navlink:visited {
color: #AAEEFF;
text-decoration: none;
}
a.navlink:hover {
color: #BBBB00;
text-decoration: underline;
}
a.navlink:active {
color: blue;
}

a.bodylink:link {
color: #0000ff;
font-size: 18pt;
font-weight: bold;
}
a.bodylink:visited {
color: #FFFFFF: bold;
}
a.bodylink:hover {
text-decoration: overline;
}
a.bodylink:active {
color: black;
}

Now to use it:
<a href="http://www.paralleldesigns.net" class="bodylink">Parallel Designs</a>

or

<a href="http://www.teamesprit.com/" class="navlink">Team Esprit</a>

Pretty darn simple, even I can do it! Until next time, when the next css tip comes to your town...

XML what a great thing!

So in talking with a great Webmaster, I was discussing RSS and how you can use other Web sites' content to build content on your site. This is great as it allows you to expand your Web site giving you better ranking and placement in search engines such as Yahoo and Google by simpling writing and URL.

Although I have done XML in the past, I have never really implemented a RSS parser. So I'm looking foward to developing this on my site. I was recommended a free php product named Magpie, it's suppose to be an easy setup... will find out soon enough.

The joys of FREE!!!!!!!

Just found out that Ebay now has a version of ad-sense. I think it's still beta as it is flawed. We just try incorporating and the keywords generated some pretty funny things. We keyworded VoIP, call center, and CRM. This yield among other things a "MYSTERY JAR OF EXTRA CRUNCHY SKIPPY PEANUT BUTTER WOW", although a pretty funny auction, nothing related to our keywords. Hopefully the good folks at Ebay will perfect this tool, google provides pretty good revenue, it would be nice to make more money from other companies too.

The bottom line is, don't be afraid to try new tools because in the long run they can be some pretty good source of revenue, and at worst you get to play with yet more code leaving you with more meat for your resume.

At what point does a designer becomes a salesman? Well, today I found out that in order to be a successful designer you have to be a great salesman. I have suspected this for many years, but today I came to this final conclusion and realization.

The client is often happy if you present a design better than what they previously had or have shown you. Easier said than done. I recently redesigned my company's Web site and everybody has been ranting and raving about how great it is, this and that... blah blah blah; until today when one of our sponsor threaten to pull out because they now have to share placement with other companies where they use to be number one on the list.

Excuse me, but what they failed to tell us is that they are now running a competitive campaign against ours and the numbers have decrease from our part. Well, sherlock, what were you expecting, double the traffic for a saturated market of the same viewers?

As a designer you have to be prepare to explain why your design is the way it is and why it is better than what they think it should be, after all we are trained professionals. You don't see me running into my dentist office telling him that he should fill cavities with crystalize sugar because it will be sweeter for the patient and it'll look nicer than some silver filling.

BTW - Bagels weren't that great today :-( (see previous post for details)

Hello Blog World

SO here I am sitting at my bedside exploring the Web, when I finally decided to join the blog revolution. Why not, all the cool kids are doing it. For all intent and purposes, I am a Web designer and developer, but I'm also a techie, so I will focus this blog on the challenges I'm face with on a day to day basis on this fast pace world of computers.

From viruses to CSS I will cover it all. I'm always seeking new knowledge and hope to share my new found trick with the rest of the world. It will be posted here for all to see and read. Wouldn't want you to just see it, now would I...

Well, that's all for now, I better get to bed if I'm to wake up in the am to enjoy bagel Friday... Yes, this is all I have to look forward to on Friday at work (my employer sponsors free bagel every Friday, its not a bad deal.)
