Photo Resizing

Designers will tell you that photo resizing is one of the biggest challenge they find on the Web. More specifically, it is always hard to resize a large image because by the time you make it more of a thumbnail all detail is lost.

In the same manner, when you enlarge an image typically it becomes quite pixelated and details become sharp boxes thereby rendering the photo useless.

A colleague just send me a video of how new technologies are been used to approximate colors and details that are now in use to address both the resizing up and shrinking down issues.

The bottom line is that with time technology makes all processes better. I was recently discussing with another colleague how old printing terms still apply today. The technology is much advance but the remnants are still there. I'm just glad that humans are always seeking to evolve, whether is monetarily driven or not is not the concern, but if money keeps the advances coming then let the creative ones become rich and the richer ones become richer. You can watch the video here.

A Hotel Out of This World

I'm down in Orlando for a trade show and I'm staying at the Gaylord Palms. What a great hotel. Large rooms, more than comfortable beds, great TV selection and more impressive, what a great lobby and internal experience.

The hotel has three great restaurants making very easy to dine and wine clients. In addition, there is a waterfall that extends approximately 25ft in the air to land on a man made lake filled with coi fishes one two thirds and the reminder third has five to six 4foot alligators and half a dozen turtles.

Tonight I dine in the steak house and was pleasantly surprise, not only was my steak cooked to perfection, but it was tender, juicy and very flavorful. This 24oz beast ranks up there with some of my favorites steaks. For a five star luxury hotel, the prices where right on par, the red blooded piece cost $35 with a $6 dollar charge for a side of creamed goat cheese spinach. The vegetable was just on par and nothing to write home about.

Overall, the hotel is designed to entertained and attract the wealthier crowd visiting Mickey Mouse. The large size pool has a giant size octopus serving as sprinklers on the family pool, while there is a separate pool for the grown-ups or singles staying at the resort. I can't comment much as I'm here on business and have not had a chance to test the waters, but not for lack of interest.

The hotel claimed to offer free Wi-Fi, but it was requiring registration when I tried it. Thanks to my AT&T card I have no need to register or pay a dime.

The bottom line is that when you want to experience that which the rich and famous experience in Orlando, this is the kind of place where you want to stay and hobnob. Did I mention that the hotel's spa is Canyon Ranch. In case you are not familiar, this spa is designed to be afforded by only the very high class. The Spa requires a 3 night minimum stay starting at just $3,200.

It's my birthday and I'll blog if I want to

Funny thing, we moved to Florida after I sword I would never move down here. I always thought of Florida as hot as balls and full of cue tips (old ladies.) Turns out this area is young, hip, and as far as the weather is concerned, the Northeast is worst.

Maybe is because JAX is the western most spot of the eastern seaboard. Maybe is those sea side winds, whatever it is, I'm in love with it. I'm never, ever going back up North.

Why am I telling you this, because this has been the year of change for me and today is my birthday. I share my birthday with so many. First my aunt Asuncion, she's however down in the Dominican Republic. Second, my good friend Gina; happy Birthday Gina! Next, my ex-coworker Rachel. Lastly, Napoleon Bonaparte, my idol and hero. Many claim him as insane, I see him as an inspiration who left one of the biggest legacies know to date.

Back to the changes, one of the biggest ones was my second marriage, yet another thing I sword that I wasn't going to do again. My baby is great and she surprised me today with a Nintendo Wii. Biggest birthday surprise to date. You see growing up in a beach country is hard not to be at the beach summer times, so I always got shafted as I was away for my birthday and celebrations were nice, but pretty much presentless. I think that's why I don't care about birthdays, presents, etc.

Next change, new job. I worked for a publishing company in CT, though I learned a lot in my two and a half years there, I felt like my hands were always tied and didn't care for the direction the company was headed. Through family and friends I was able to find a job in publishing down here and I feel lucky to be working among so many generous and hard working individuals.

The last change is my memory. As I get older I felt like I just couldn't remember anything. I was chatting with a good friend today who pointed out that is not that we can't remember or that we are candidates for alzheimer's, but the fact that there is just so much more to remember. When we were younger, the facts were easy, school and friends contact information. School is easy, always was for me. Phone numbers then easy as well. With a handful of friends all with one number to remember, piece of cake, birthday cake. Now, as grown-ups, we still need to have that school knowledge coupled with practical work knowledge. Project priorities and contacts responsible for each task. Each contact phone, email, cell phone, and home phone information. Relatives names, contact information, kids names, ages, birthdays, and the data dump goes on and on. So is not that I'm losing my memory, but data overload. STOP!!!!

Someone once told me that perception is reality. It doesn't matter whether is true or not, if you perceive it one way, then that's your reality. My perception is that I know too many and they all have way too much for me to remember. Many say that we have become tied up to technology to remember everything, but the reality, as I perceive it, is that without technology we wouldn't know where to turn to hold all the data.

The bottom line is that I'm still not that old and I no longer feel like I have alzheimer's, instead I know understand things better and only remember that which is crucial. And eventhough it was a quiet birthday, I feel very content. My first wife once threw me a surprise birthday party and I thought it couldn't get better than that. However, I think this birthday tops that one. Maybe I'm more mature and see the value of an intimate birthday with the one you love by your side or maybe is the Wii. Either way, thanks Punki for an awesome evening.

St. Augustine is old but has lots of style

The communities in St. Augustine are designed in such a way that you feel like you are in the middle of no where, yet you drive out of the community entrance and there are shops, bars, and plenty of nightlife.

This past weekend I finally got to go out and get to see what's around nearby the new digs. This new chapter is very interesting. There is a lot going on and yet feels like there is not much. Within ten minutes I can find an outlet store center with over 200 shops, mostly top name designers.

Five minutes past the outlets, I can find downtown St. Augustine. There is a lot of history there. I didn't arrive downtown until after 4p.m. on Sunday. Everything closes there early, but what I saw I enjoyed. St. Augustine is the first city in the United States. There was a demonstration happening near the Castillo of San Marcos, a Spanish fort designed and built in the 1600's in an effort to guard the city. The old fort help the Spaniards keep a hold of Florida from the Brits for many years. During the American Revolution, this fort was a British stronghold, and later it served as a battery for the US Coastal defense system.

This fort is now one of the major tourist attractions in St. Augustine. They happened to be having a very nice demonstration of how the Spaniards dressed and weapons used while I was visiting. They fired off riffles and a canon. The later was quite loud and although we were forewarned to cover our ears, one could still feel the body rattle and shake, enough to skip a beat. All and all a very interesting visit. I will need to come back and see more, a lot more.

The bottom line is that when you find yourself in a new location, it is very important to drive around and get to know the area. Not only do you get to see a lot of interesting stuff, but when it visitor season opens, otherwise known as "the relatives are visiting", there are plenty of ways and places to keep them out of the house.
