Blogger, Remember Me

I blog regularly using Blogger as my platform. I think its design is user friendly and have just enough features both in its "Compose" and "Edit Html" panes making it one of the easiest textboxes / HTML editors. I have use a few in the past like FCK editor and HTMLArea, but these type of editors offer the user too many options.

I also enjoy the "labels" area and, the recently added, save now button.

Google is known for designing simple to use, yet very powerful interfaces. Most importantly, they provide these free of charge.

The only beef I have so far is that the "remember me" check box in the blogger homepage never remembers me. I have cookies enable and other Google sites, such as youTube, Analytics/Urchin, iGoogle, and Gmail seem to remember me just fine.

The bottom line is that I'm very surprise that a powerful company like Google with unlimited resources has left this small detail sly. I understand that Blogger didn't start out being a Google company, but in the two years that I have been using the site, this has never worked for me, regardless of browser. Oddly enough I googled this topic tonight and didn't get too far in finding a resolution.

Update to previous entry: I received a Halloween Joke from a colleague, here it is:

A man was walking home alone late one foggy night,

when behind him he hears:

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him.

BUMP...

BUMP..

BUMP..

Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him

FASTER...
FASTER...

BUMP...
BUMP...
BUMP...

He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him.

However, the casket crashes throught his door, with the lid of the casket clapping...

clappity-BUMP...
clappity-BUMP...
clappity-BUMP...

on his heels, the terrified man runs.

Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.

With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.

Bumping and clapping toward him.

The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a bottle of Robitussin!

Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket... And, the coffin stops!

Happy Halloween

The holiday season is upon us. It starts with Halloween, then Thanksgiving. Turkey day is follow by Christmas, Hanukkah, and the likes and we finish it up with New years. Before you know it 2008 will be here.

I recently wrote on the topic of travel sites. Now is time to start thinking about family and friends and what to get them. Last year my wife and I decided not to exchange gifts until after Christmas. The thought there was that we could get better bargains when everyone is returning. This was a good plan in theory, but it turns out that in practice is not the same. We ended up getting bargains, but also found a lot of stuff had sold.

If you are already planning and don't know what to get that special someone, don't dispear, there are numerous sites designed to help folks create an online wish list that they can distribute to family and friends. Examples are Kaboodle, WhattoGive.com, Amazon.com, and many many more.

As well, many are planing on their new skits and youTube videos they will distribute. My favorite last year was one designed by the folks at SNL. It had a ton of hits on youTube, but unfortunately it has been pulled due to copyright laws. If you search there are a lot of remix and remakes, but nothing beats the original. You can catch it here.

As well, someone made a great flash animation for the 12 days of Christmas.

The bottom line is that for creative folks, there are still a lot of material that hasn't been tapped and I look forward to some great laughter this holiday season. I was surprise not to get any forwards this year showcasing some Halloween materials, but the day is not over. Happy Candy Day.

Joseph Finder: Power Play

On my recent trip to Cincinnati I purchased the latest Joseph Finder book, my favorite author, Power Play. His site sums up the plot as:

"It was the perfect retreat for a troubled company. No cell phones. No BlackBerrys. No cars. Just a luxurious, remote lodge surrounded by thousands of miles of wilderness.

All the top officers of the Hammond Aerospace Corporation are there. And one last-minute substitute — a junior executive named Jake Landry. He’s a steady, modest, and taciturn guy with a gift for keeping his head down and a turbulent past he’s trying to put behind him.

Jake’s uncomfortable with all the power players he's surrounded by, with all their swaggering and posturing. The only person there he knows is the female CEO’s assistant—his ex-girlfriend, Ali.

When a band of backwoods hunters crash the opening-night dinner, the executives suddenly find themselves held hostage by armed men who will do anything, to anyone, to get their hands on the largest ransom inhistory. Now, terrified and desperate and cut off from the rest of the world, the captives are at the mercy of hard men with guns who may not be what they seem.

The corporate big shots hadn’t wanted Jake there. But now he’s the only one who can save them.

Power Play is a non-stop, pulse-pounding, high-stakes thriller that will hold the reader riveted until the very last page."

As I expected, the book was high thrilling, a fast read, and just a great fiction. I was first introduced to Finder by an ex-colleague via the book Paranoia. Finder is a master of the business world thriller and I have seek high and low for similar authors and I'm yet to find one I enjoy as much as Finder's work. I now own have read all of his books even those that were turn into movies.

The bottom line is that if you are seeking to get the best action you can read, then Joseph Finder is your guy. The Boston native has a way of telling a story that keeps you at the edge of suspense.

Travel Sites

With the holidays soon approaching, it seems I'm getting a lot of calls from relatives and friends about booking trips. Of course, these all comes about because of our recent relocation to sunny Florida.

I typically turn to the usual suspects when it comes to researching flights and tickets, Expedia and Travelocity. These sites are designed to be easy to use and with the user in mind. Their designs and architecture are always improving. The most recent of updates is the ability to quickly search nearby airports to the destination or departure cities.

A new travel search engine is, however, on the rise. Kayak.com is designed to allow the user to not only get the cheapest tickets, but to run comparison of nearby airports. The site also allows you to use its interface to compare prices on Expedia, Travelocity and Hotwire, all with the click of a three checkboxes. The site also remembers your previous searches in order to save time on future searches. As you type in the city or airport code in the search boxes, a drop down similar to that of the Google toolbar comes up to aid you in locating your departure or destination cities.

Kayak is also designed to present a very user friendly results page which quickly allows you to select if you prefer nonstop, one stop, or two stops flights. As well, you can narrow down via flight times and price.

The bottom line is that I can now understand why Kayak.com is such an up and coming site, after all they have now achieve an Alexa ranking of 1782. Competition promotes better features and alternatives, while providing the best prices for consumers. Kayak.com is also a great example of conveniences presented to users. It is amazing what great design and information architecture can do for a site. Expedia (Alexa of 542) and Travelocity (Alexa of 781), better get up to speed on the technology back end or they will loose their placing among the travel sites.

Jax, Jaguars, DMV, and more.

So a few weeks ago the wife and I went down to check out the Jaguars. I never was into football as they don't play that where I come from. I have to admit it was very exciting seeing the live action.

I went to Yankee Stadium a bunch of times, but baseball is not quite as exciting. The Jaguars fans are die hard. The game is quite fast and time went by so quick. We were sitting at the fifty yard line, third row. It was so close you could smell the players' sweat.

Since I never had an affiliation with a football team, I think I'm going to adopt the Jaguars as my team. I even started participating in the office weekly football team. I was very close to wining last week, I tied with three other colleagues and lost on the tie breaker, but I feel like I'm getting a handle on this football thing.

Since attending the game I now have started to wear glasses for long distance viewing. I guess they call it nearsighted. I always get confused because the terms are the opposite of what you are. I didn't feel like I needed the glasses and enjoyed the game just the same. Florida, however, required me to get the eye test and now glasses before they would give me a driver's license. It took me five trips to DMV to finally get the license, but hey is Florida, with the exception of this morning, all trips took a maximum of 10 minutes and is only a 1/4 mile down the street from work. I would have been really annoyed if it was CT or NY where a trip to the DMV meant a minimum of 3 hours. The first lady I dealt with was a total "Bitch," and it thought she was a bit racist, but turns out that she is just a grumpy old bat. This is only the second unfriendly individual I have encountered since our arrival in to the Jax Area.

The bottom line is that football is a lot of fun and I'm totally hooked. We even tuned in this past Monday to ESPN and Monday Night Football. If you don't mind rain everyday during the fall, but mostly beautiful afternoons, then you should consider Jacksonville, FL. If you do decide to make the move, make sure your eyes are set and you won't have to battle the DMV like I did. Get your eyesight regularly anyways, it can prevent a lot of trouble down the line. I can't envisioned anything worse than loosing your sight, but that's because I'm a designer and I wouldn't know what to do without my vision.
